Evaluation Process & Criteria
How Festivals Are Assessed
Film festivals considered for recognition within the Elite Festivals Gold Reel Star Rating System are evaluated through a structured review process designed to assess professionalism, transparency and the overall value provided to filmmakers.
The evaluation process is intended to identify festivals that demonstrate strong organisational standards and a genuine commitment to supporting the filmmaking community.
Festivals may be invited for evaluation or apply directly through the Elite Festivals platform.
Each festival is reviewed against a set of established criteria forming the Elite Festivals evaluation framework.
The Evaluation Framework
Elite Festivals evaluates festivals across three core areas that reflect the most important factors for filmmakers when selecting where to submit their work.
These areas are:
• Film Festival Excellence
• Transparency
• Benefits to Submitters
Together, these criteria provide a balanced assessment of the festival’s professionalism, operational integrity and the opportunities it offers to filmmakers.
Film Festival Excellence
This category evaluates the overall quality and professionalism of the festival.
Assessment may consider factors such as:
• Festival programming and film selection standards
• Quality and organisation of the event or screening programme
• Industry reputation and credibility
• Professional presentation of the festival brand and materials
• Recognition provided to selected films and award winners
Festivals demonstrating strong organisational standards and a well-curated programme may achieve higher levels of Gold Reel Star recognition.
Transparency
Transparency is a fundamental requirement for maintaining trust between festivals and filmmakers.
Elite Festivals reviews whether festivals operate with clear and open policies, including:
• Clearly published submission rules and eligibility criteria
• Transparent judging and selection processes
• Clear communication with filmmakers
• Accurate representation of awards and opportunities
• Fair and ethical operational practices
Festivals demonstrating strong transparency provide filmmakers with confidence in the integrity of the event.
Benefits to Submitters
This category assesses the value a festival provides to the filmmakers who submit their work.
Evaluation may consider factors such as:
• Recognition and visibility for selected films
• Promotional opportunities for filmmakers and their projects
• Industry exposure or networking opportunities
• Professional laurels, awards or certificates
• Overall support offered to participating filmmakers
Festivals that actively promote and support filmmakers may achieve higher levels of recognition within the Gold Reel Star Rating System.
